The Car Your Dad Drove?

My dad is a truck man.

He had a blue Ford F150 with the manual transmission gear shift
on the steering wheel column instead of the floor. Friday evenings immediately after school, we would cram into the cab--all four of us--and drive to town for a fast food dinner and grocery shopping.

This was our Friday night ritual and we didn't deviate from it until I was in high school when I was old enough to stay home alone. By then, my older brother had moved out.

We trekked down to Disney World in that truck, a two day drive. My dad drove that truck until it died, replacing parts as needed. Then he traded it in for a green Ford F150. This one had the manual gear shift on the floor and that clutch was a bear to depress. I didn't like driving it because I didn't think one should have to work so hard just to shift gears.

In 1997, he bought a hunter green Dodge Ram pickup, which is a two tank diesel; I don't know the model. Best damn truck he's ever owned, he says. He's still got it. Since that type of truck costs too much to replace, he repairs it as needed.  He says that just about every part has been replaced.

What kind of car or truck did your dad drive? Leave a comment below.
